Shooting Stars goalkeeper Abiodun Akande has been sidelined from Sunday’s second leg Caf Under-23 Championship qualifier between Nigeria and Congo as he is yet to fully recover from injury.
An ankle injury forced Akande out of the first leg, which Nigeria won 2-1 in Port-Harcourt, and the goalkeeper has yet to regain match fitness in time for the decisive showdown in Point Noire.
He told AfricanFootball.com: “I won’t play in the game against Congo this weekend because I just get back to fitness from ankle injury which made me miss the first leg.
“I talked with the coach and I was asked to stay away and get to full fitness for the All-Africa Games camping. That since I am just returning to action, it will be better not to go for the second leg.”
Akande is back at his club base ahead of the restart of the Glo Premier League season.
A draw, better still win, will see the Nigeria Dream Team VI advance into the group competition of the U-23 Championship, which serves as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games.
