House Of Reps Crisis: Pressure Mounts On Lasun To Step Down To Enable S/West Produce Majority Leader

Yusuf LasunIndications emerged yesterday that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, may be prevailed upon by the All Progressives Congress to step down to allow another zone other than the South-West occupy the position.
This, it was gathered, was part of the options presently being explored to end the current stalemate in the Green Chamber.
It was learnt that separate meetings were held by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, Lasun and Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, where the deputy speaker hails from and National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in the latter’s office in Abuja on Friday towards this end.
After the meeting both Dogara and the chairman declined to speak with journalists at the party’s secretariat.
Later, Odigie-Oyegun met with Lasun before they were joined by Aregbesola. They also declined to speak to journalists after the meeting.
Although details of the meeting were kept under wraps, it was gathered that the talks centered on asking Lasun to step down as deputy speaker to enable the South-West produce the Majority Leader of the House.
Femi Gbajabiamila is the party’s preferred choice for the position.
Confirming that the meeting indeed took place, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Wale Oladimeji, however denied speculation his principal was asked to step down.
“While it is true that the deputy speaker, Aregbesola and Odigie-Oyegun met, I don’t know where information asking Lasun to step down is coming from”, he said.
