Footballer Loses Fresh Contract After Club Found He Abused Them On Twitter 3 Years Back

Julio Rey has nobody but himself to blame after Deportivo La Coruna canceled his contract in a matter of hours (of signing them) because of a Twitter abuse he targeted at the Spanish club three years ago.

Very often we hear footballers tweeting slur remarks at oppositions- maybe after a bad game, an altercation with fans or what have you- but this 20-year-old, after spending much of his career in the Spanish fourth tier, was close to a dream move to Deportivo over the weekend, which in reality never happened.

Deportivo had agreed to a deal to sign Rey and had even began brandishing his photos on their website, until it all fell apart.

Depor, on their routine checkup through Rey’s social media activities dug up more than the player had knowingly or unknowingly bargained for- a single tweet back in 2012.

Rey swiftly deleted his Twitter account, but to no avail, as Deportivo had already terminated his contract at that time.

The La Liga club said in a statement: “Real Club Deportivo, who announced the signing of Julio Rey in the afternoon after the player signed his contract with the club, have decided to cancel the transfer after analysing an unfortunate comment on the player’s … social media profile several years ago.

“[Deportivo] believes that a player deserves to wear the blue and white shirt if he’s an example of sportsmanship, respectful of their rivals, committed and has positive feelings toward Depor, it’s colours, it’s crest and those values that represent this institution.”
