Jerome Valcke Considering Running for Fifa Presidency- Report

Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke could run for the post of Fifa president in the forthcoming election.

According to the BBC Sport, the world football governing body chief scribe has met at least one regional confederation and national association to assess his chances.

Valcke has also consulted several Fifa officials, though some senior officials are said to have advised him against running.

The United States Department of Justice is investigating top Fifa officials and a number of football officials in connection with allegations of bribery, racketeering and corruption.

Valcke’s candidacy is understandably deemed a decision to undermine Fifa’s resolve to proof to prosecutors that it is serious about reform by its opponents.

Valcke has himself been mentioned as a co-conspirator in an alleged $10m bribe, which US prosecutors say was paid by South Africa to former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner in return for vote and backing during their successful bid to host to the 2010 World Cup.

Warner is said to have been paid directly from a Fifa bank account after being deducted from South Africa’s World Cup local organising committee budget.

South Africa insists the money was only to aid football development in the Caribbean and not for bribery.

The Frenchman has not been accused of any wrongdoing and denies any claims of corruption.
