The All Progressives Con¬gress, APC, has appointed a former interim chairman of the party in Kaduna State, Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed as chairman of the committee that will screen the 19 aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the November 21 governorship election in Bayelsa State.
The APC governorship primary elections in Bayelsa have been scheduled for September 19.
While inaugurating the committee yesterday in Abuja, APC Deputy Na¬tional Chairman, South, Dr. Segun Oni, assured that the screening of the aspi¬rants will be free, fair and transparent.
Noting that Nigerians are now getting used to transparent primaries and that the party will continue to provide level playing field for all aspirants seek¬ing the ticket of the party, Oni said: “We will continue to conduct transparent primaries in our party as part of our contribution to deepen democracy, so that others will begin to see the wisdom in doing that.
“We have done that in Kogi successfully, and we have confidence in the abil¬ity of this team to do justice to all aspirants”.
“We are not screening the aspirants to determine result, we are doing it to de¬termine if all of them are qualified to contest and if they are, they will all con¬test, we would not discrimi¬nate against any aspirant”, he added.
In his response, Baba-Ahmed commended the party for entrusting them with the job, assuring that the screening of the aspi¬rants will be free, fair and transparent.
He said: “The race to Bayelsa Government House starts today, the APC is a party that respects the views of Nigerians, the peo¬ple of Bayelsa are yearning for change. We would treat this responsibility with all the seriousness it deserves; we would submit the report on Friday morning”.
The Bayelsa State Screening Committee also has Barrister Awole Nwoko, who is to serve as the secretary.
Other members include: Mrs. Kemi Olaleye, Hon Sunny Adamu, Hon Okon Eket, Hon Bashir Bolalowa, and Engr. Nonso Nnorom.
