83 senators have passed a vote of confidence on Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki who is undergoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged false declaration of assets.
This happened as the Senate reconvened today after a six-week recess. Although, majority of the senators declared support for Saraki, a rowdy session reportedly ensued in the Senate following the vote of conficence.
Meanwhile, pro-Saraki protesters have barricaded the National Assembly complex. The protesters are asking anti-graft agencies to desist from being used against what they perceive as “political enemies”.
Update: There were 84 senators, according to initial reports. But a Senator from Osun State Babajide Omoworare said: “Ordinarily, by virtue of my position as the chairman business and rules committee, I should have seen this motion before now. But it comes a matter of urgent importance. My name is listed as number 11. Let me say that i don’t know how my name got into the list. I hereby say I’m not part of it.”
