The first Council of State meeting convened by President Muhammadu Buhari held today at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa with former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as well as Senate President Bukola Saraki, conspicuously missing.
Also missing, was former President Shehu Shagari.
The meeting, which started at 11.00am, among others, approved the appointment of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
It also approved the appointment of new national commissioners for the electoral body.
The Council of State, chaired by the president, also has as members, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, all living former Presidents and Heads of State, Senate President, House of Representatives Speaker, all living former Chief Justices of Nigeria and all state governors.
The former Nigerian leaders in attendance at the emergency meeting on Wednesday are retired Generals Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdusalami Abubakar as well as former head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan.
State governors and deputy governors are also attending the meeting.
