National Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has described the ruling by the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal declaring Senator Aisha Al-Hassan of the APC, the duly elected Governor, as a victory for democracy and triumph of the people’s will.
Hajiya Aliyu, who doubles as the President, Women Wing, Council of African Political Parties, in a statement yesterday, called on Nigerian women to rally support for the Tribunal’s ruling.
She said the verdict remained a priceless watershed in Nigeria’s political history for her party to produce the first elected female Governor in Taraba State.
“It is a clear affirmation that no matter how long it takes, never will the verdict of the people during elections be manipulated against their popular choice as expressed through the ballot box. Indeed, by the ruling, it has been proven that in a true democracy, sovereignty ultimately resides with the inviolable will of the people”, she added.
The APC national woman leader, therefore, commended the judiciary for its boldness and commitment to the sacred principles of honour, good conscience and the truth.
She further urged the judiciary to remain alive to its commitment to “dispensing justice to all without fear or favour in order to sustain constitutional democracy rooted in free and fair elections, respect for the rule of law and the wishes of the people”.
