Saraki: Tribunal Adjourns Trial Till Nov. 19 As Senate President’s Lawyers Stage Walk Out

Senate-president-Bukola-Saraki-CCTThe team of lawyers representing embattled Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, including Saka Issau (SAN), Ahmed Raji (SAN), Mahmud Magaji (SAN) and 23 others, Thursday, staged a walk out on the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja when the tribunal ruled and refused their application for stay of proceedings in Saraki’s trial.

Earlier, counsel to the Federal Government, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had notified the tribunal that the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal had in a judgment it delivered on October 30, struck out Dr. Saraki’s appeal against his trial.

However, the Senate president through his lawyer, Mr. Magaji, urged the tribunal to adjourn the trial and await the decision of the appeal he has lodged before the Supreme C‎ourt.

Magaji, who led the walk-out, described the tribunal’s decision to proceed with the case despite Saraki’s filing of an appeal at the apex court, as “judicial rascality”.

The Tribunal Chairman, Justice Danladi Umar, described Saraki’s lawyers’ conduct as an act of disrespect to the court, describing their walk out as unwarranted.

He adjourned to November 19 before which he advised Saraki to engage a new set of lawyers.

  1. To walk out on a duly constituted court of law and in a manner done by Saraki’s lawyers is contmptuous and the lawyers should face sanction of the Disciplinary Committee of the bar association. These lawyers are doing their client’s brief no good and ought to be sacked by their client for playing to the gallery and abandoning the duties for which they have been paid which in itself is professional misconduct.
