Former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, yesterday urged Nigerians to advance genuine love that would bind the nation on the path of peace.
He gave the advice at the presentation of a book titled: The Story of Abuja; Nigeria’s New Capital, written by Dr Longinus Ofoegbu.
Gowon, who was represented by his younger brother Dauda as Special Guest of Honour, said sustainability of peace and sincere contribution of personal quota would enable Nigeria attain greatness.
According to him, the book is a product of painstaking research undertaken by an insider who is familiar with the history of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“I count myself fortunate to have been the Head of State who initiated the idea of the FCT that successive leadership and administrations continued and completed. The 16-chapter book of 432 pages contains interesting accounts of the geography of the FCT to the development of infrastructure and social services as well as the resultant population dynamics of the territory.
“The author’s dispassionate analysis of land administration in the FCT with a view to eliminate corruption and engender social justice is commendable”, he said.
Chairman of the occasion, former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, described the book as a simple and straight compilation of the history of the FCT.
Gana, who was also represented by former Minister of the FCT, Mr Mohammed Gana, said the book was a good source of information and knowledge.
“The book gives a firsthand experience of the FCT; I commend Dr L. I. Ofoegbu for this insightful compilation”.
The author, Ofoegbu, who retired as Director of Education in FCT, is now a lawyer. (NAN)
