5 Things A Nigerian Student Must Know Before Graduation

And then when you finally graduate after all the challenges

When you are a student, time flies, graduation comes knocking in no time and the only thing you have, is your result, whether good or bad. As a student, the whole world looks unusually bright and promising, and you can’t wait to finish NYSC and get that six figure paying job. No one is trying to rain on your parade but the reality Nigeria right now is that graduates are more than the available jobs. Everyone has that uncle who will hook him up after graduation (but they never do). So, just so you are prepared for whats to come after graduation and service, INFORMATION NIGERIA has put together 5 Things a Nigerian undergraduate must know before graduation…

Development yourself: Get skills, broaden your horizon, don’t just depend on your intelligence and ability to score an A, in every course. Being able to succeed in the labour market goes far beyond what the lecturers taught you. Equip yourself with skills like Microsoft Office, programming, sewing, baking or anything extra apart from your knowledge of Physics or mathematics. Build your opinion, define your values, sharpen your knowledge, read often, analyze things closely and expand your vision.

Build a network – You will be able to find a job much faster with a large network. So do not just drown in your books all the time and forget to socialise. Make connections with professionals every chance you get because it’s all about who you know. Make connections that will benefit both your personal and professional life.

Beg for an internship: Even if it is only for a few hours a week and you are not doing it for any credit. Just getting the experience and being able to list it on your resume is worth it. This will help you gain valuable experience not found in books.

Set goals: It is important to set clear goals for yourself on what you want to achieve when you leave the University. Most people just leave school with absolutely no plan except dreaming of getting a good job. Structure your goals and how you plan to achieve them.

Find a Hobby – Something that you enjoy doing in your spare time. A lot of people never thought they would become rich and famous just doing what they thought was a hobby. Who knows, your hobby may end up putting food on your table someday.

Its called the real world for a reason, because things work there like magic. So when you graduate and things don’t go your way, do not freak out. Keep sending your CVs and never stop developing yourself.
