Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who was not an active participant in either the January 1966 coup and a counter coup in July 1966 was appointed the military governor of Nigeria’s Eastern region in January 1966 by General Aguyi Ironsi….

Ojukwu left office on 27 May 1967 after he declared Biafra’s Independence on 30 May 1967.
