Benue Killings “Getting Out Of Hand”, Gov Ortom Cries Out As Reps Order Probe

Samuel OrtomGovernor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom, has raised the alarm over the incessant killings in the Food Basket state, saying the dastardly act is spiraling out of control.
Speaking with State House correspondents on Thursday after emerging from a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, the governor said while the state was making efforts towards maintaining law and order, he thought it necessary to brief the Presidency on the situation.
Ortom said the issue would come up for discussion at the next meeting of the National Economic Council where concrete steps would be taken to address the situation.
“There are issues in my state especially the invasion of herders in one of my local governments, Agatu Local Government. I think that the situation in Benue, especially in Agatu, is getting out of hand. Right now as I talk to you, several settlements have been razed down, an undisclosed number of people were killed and my people are refugees all over the place. I cannot sit back in Benue State when such thing is happening”, he said.
In a related development, the House of Representatives has resolved to probe the incessant killings of people by unknown gunmen in some communities in Benue State.
The green chamber noted that attacks in some communities in Agatu have been on since last year, leading to killings while many others sustained injuries.
Adopting a motion by Rep Adamu Ochepe Entonu (PDP, Benue), the House mandated its committee on intelligence and public safety to investigate the matter with a view to providing lasting solutions and report back in four weeks.
