Wike Orders Rivers Students On Overseas Scholarship To Return To Nigeria To Complete Their Studies

Nyesom Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has asked all indigenes of the state who are being sponsored by the State Government in foreign universities to return home to continue their schooling at the State-owned University of Science and Technology and University of Port Harcourt.

He, however, said if their course of study is not being offered by RSUST or UNIPORT, admissions would be sought for them in any government-owned university in Nigeria that offers their course of study.

The governor attributed the development to the dire financial constraints the state is currently facing coupled with the heavy financial burden the overseas scholarship programme on the state’s finances.

The directive recalling the students was contained in a letter dated February 4 and signed by the Executive Director/CEO of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency, RSSDA, Lawrence Pepple.

The directive, however, does not affect students of Rivers origin in their final year ending in 2016 as the government said it was sourcing for funds to pay for their scholarships.
