Facebook’s 360-degree video debuts in Nigeria

Facebook, the world’s leading social media platform, yesterday saw the use of its innovative 360 video technology by Naij.com – the first by a Nigerian news website.

Rolled out in 2015, the 360 video is a ‎tool to bring immersive stories from the continent to the world. The innovative technology allows users to choose what angle they want to see a video from while it plays on Facebook. Users are able to hold up their devices and the 360 video will follow as they turn, look around, to enjoy a unique visual experience.

Naij.com, a Nigeria-based online news platform, and one of Facebook’s Instant Article partners on the continent, ‎deployed the 360 video technology in its coverage of the protest by students in Lagos against the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over perceived irregularities in the examination and result.

With a whole world of video content and stories being published daily on diverse platforms, it is expected that we will see and experience even more innovative and compelling 360 videos being shared by publishers.

‎Facebook continues to drive its mission to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected, connecting over 1.04 billion daily active users worldwide and 7.2 million daily visitors from Nigeria.
