Man Crash Stolen Car, Runs Away With License Plate

A drunken 29-year-old man who police say crashed a stolen car Friday and was arrested after he took the car’s license plate and ran from the scene of the crash, according to investigators. Jonathan Salo appeared in Cleveland Municipal Court Tuesday to face charges of aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence, receiving stolen property and failing to stop at the scene of a crash.

Judge Marilyn Cassidy set his bond at $50,000. Salo was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs and driving a stolen 2000 Nissan Altima about 7:30 p.m. in Old Brooklyn, court records say. He crashed into a 2005 Chrysler 300, injuring the 51-year-old driver. Salo took the license plate off the car he was driving and ran away, records say.

Police caught up to him and arrested him about 10 minutes later on Gifford Avenue. Salo, who is white, pleaded guilty last year to ethnic intimidation after he poured beer over a man’s head and threatened to beat the man up because he is black, court records say. Salo has been convicted of failing to comply with police after they found him driving stolen cars in 2014, 2010 and 2006, according to court records.
