Obama Abandons U.S. Policy Of Isolating Cuba

President Barack Obama arrived in Cuba on Sunday to kick off a historic visit to the country. This heralds a new chapter in U.S. engagement with the island’s government after decades of hostility. He is the first sitting US president to visit since the 1959 revolution.

After tweeting about his arrival and later speaking to staffs and their families at the reopened US embassy in Havana, Obama described his visit to the island as “…historic… it’s a historic opportunity to engage with the Cuban people.”

Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, is a sovereign state comprising the islands of Cuba, Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos in the Caribbean Sea. The capital and largest city Havana is 365 km (227 mi) from Miami, Florida. Geographically, Cuba is considered part of North America. Culturally, it is considered part of Latin America (wikipedia)

Mr Obama will meet President Raul Castro and Fidel Castro to discuss trade and political reform. This move is aimed at beefing up the nascent ties between the former Cold War foes.

The US president emerged from Air Force One with First Lady Michelle and their daughters Sasha and Malia.

In a report by the guardian, Obama and his family are staying in a grand embassy mansion, reputedly first conceived as a possible winter White House for Franklin Roosevelt, and more than half the size of the one they live in back in Washington.
