Ita-Giwa Tasks Buhari On Resettling Bakassi IDPs

BAKASSI-INDIGENES-PROTEST

Former Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, cater for the needs of the displaced people of Bakassi, the same way he had been making provisions for the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) of the North East.

Ita-Giwa had been at the forefront of the agitation for the proper resettlement of the Bakassi people. He urged the President Buhari-led Federal Government to effectively collaborate to resettle them at their preferred location, Dayspring Island because of its contiguity to the sea to aid their fishing profession.

In a statement, yesterday, Senator Ita-Giwa restated that her people are hardworking people, who do not wish to be perpetually dependent on government’s goodwill but want a conducive and enabling environment to earn a living.

“The people have been traumatised and dehumanized while the youths are languishing in hopelessness with their generation gradually fainting into oblivion.”

She noted that as the rain season approaches: “The Federal government should please pay more attention to the people so as to alleviate their suffering and poverty,” adding that the Cross Rivers State government alone cannot provide social facilities.
