Former Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo has been announced as the new manager of Aston Villa.
Di Matteo will replace Remi Garde who left the club in March before Villa’s subsequent relegation from the English Premier League.
The 46-year old Italian completed an incredible feat when he won the Champions League while he was Chelsea’s caretaker in 2012. He will be charged with ensuring that Aston Villa gain promotion from the Championship in the fastest possible manner and make their return to the big leagues.
Di Matteo will take solace in that one other big name manager will also be competing in the Championship as Rafael Benitez agreed to stay at Newcastle.
Matteo has appointed former West Brom manager Steve Clarke who until December 2015 was the manager of Reading as his assistant manager.
