It was a warm afternoon in Paris as defending Champions Spain took on Italy in a crunch round of 16 tie.
If there was considerable heat, it definitely wasn’t because of the weather.

With arguably the biggest match of the tournament so far, fans on both sides were understandably tense.

Spain fielded an unchanged starting 11 from their first three games while Italy made changes following their surprise group stage loss to the Republic of Ireland.
The early 15minutes pretty much set the tone for the match with the Italians looking sharper, having more possession and forcing De Gea to make saves from Pelle, Eder and Giaccherini.
The only highlight for Spain was a Nolito slip for Spain on 15 minutes.
Hard as Spain tried to get into the match, the Italians were relentless and compact.

To be sure, Iniesta eventually forced Buffon into action as he made saves off Iniesta and Morata.

Spain looked harried and Italy’s grit paid off when De Gea spilled a free kick into the path of Chiellini who wasted no time putting Italy up.

It was an error so rudimentary, it came off looking like a training ground routine.
The second half started with Nolito going off for Aduritz after failing to find his footing in the first half and Spain seemed vibrant again.

The Italian front two rendered Sergo Busquets ineffective as David Silva first touches were uncharacteristically awful.

Spain barely looked capable of equalising as Italy’s three man defense remained rock solid.
With four mins to go, Italy once agaim looked inventive as they switched between defense and attack.

In the final minute of play, Italy struck again when a Darmian cross found Graziano Pelle who promptly volleyed home.
