2A 9-man ad hoc committee has been instituted by management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, to look into the alleged case of physical assault and ill-treatment of a student of the institution by a lecturer.

The committee is headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Professor Samuel kolo Tswanyan.

The lecturer, whose identity has been revealed as Abubakar Abdullahi Wachin of the Department of Mathematics, was caught on camera landing slaps on his student during a lecture for 100 level students.

The video, which was shared on social media, elicited outrage as most could not fathom why the lecturer would resort to physical assault of the student, no matter the offence committed.

A statement signed by the Registrar of the IBBU, Lapai, Mallam Samaila Muhammad, and made available to the students’ unions, said the university was aware of the incident and called on the parties involved to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation of the crisis as investigation was being carried out by the committee.
