Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will act as President for the duration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s holiday, starting today.
President Buhari on Monday departed Abuja for London where he is expected to spend 10 days resting and seeing Ears, Nose and Throat (E.N.T) specialists for a persistent ear infection.
Speaking to journalists at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja shortly before his plane took, the president said he had transmitted a letter to the National Assembly in fulfilment of Section 145of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, intimating the federal lawmakers of his 10-day vacation.
The section states:
Whenever the President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President.
With the letter to the National Assembly, Mr. Osinbajo has been constitutionally empowered to act as president pending Mr. Buhari’s return.
This is the second time in less than six months that Prof. Osinbajo will be Acting President.
