Today in Nigerian History;16th June

 Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, ACN leader's mother casting her vote at Alausa Ikeja,during the Local Government Election yesterday.

 

On this day in 2013; Former President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men and mother of former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji,  died. She died in her home in Ikeja, Lagos. She was 96 years.

Also on this day in 2013;There was panic in some parts of Lagos State following claims that a  commercial bus and a private car plunged into the lagoon after being involved in an accident. The news made some commuters and motorists abandon the Third Mainland Bridge while there was stampede on the bridge as those plying it at the time of incident  scampered for safety. People made distress calls to relatives, media organisations, law enforcement agencies and emergency bodies as the news spread for hours until the intervention of relevant agencies restored normalcy.  Emergency agencies like National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, state and federal fire services mobilised to the bridge only to discover the story was untrue.

 

Equally on this day in 2012;The House of Representatives removed the embattled Chairman of its Ad-hoc Committee on Petroleum Subsidy Regime, Hon. Farouk Lawan and replaced him with  John Eno, former Chairman of the Committee on appropriation even as it passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal and the leadership of the House and urged the Executive to match words with action in the implementation of its resolutions on fuel subsidy regime which exposed monumental fraud in the system. The House also relisted Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd and Synopsis Enterprises Ltd. which were earlier delisted by Lawan among companies that were indicted for fraud in the disbursement of the subsidy funds.

And on this day in 2012; A total of 25 bank officials and  policemen, suspected to be members of a bank robbery syndicate, were whisked from Warri to Asaba  by the police in connection with the bizarre disappearance of N14 million from a bullion van between Effurun and Ekpan in Delta State. The bank staff, including cashiers and drivers number 17, while the policemen were eight in number. They were being detained, at the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, of the Delta State Police Command, Asaba.
