It was pandemonium on Thursday at the legislative chambers of the Ughelli South local government council when gunmen stormed the legislative session of the lawmakers, with about nine persons sustaining various forms of injuries.
The hoodlums, brandished guns, cutlasses, battle axes and other dangerous weapons, with which they used in attacking their victims injuring five Councillors, three staff of the council and the Clerk of the House who was stabbed on the head.
Military personnel, however, came to the rescue of the lawmakers, arresting 18 of the hoodlums and handed them over to the police at the Ughelli Area Command for prosecution.
The Leader of the House, December Saromare, in an interview with newsmen said the gunmen took off with the mace of the House, smashed windows, destroyed furniture and other items within the chambers.
A senior police officer at the Ughelli Area Command who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and the arrests, adding that the suspects have confessed of a top political office holder in the Ughelli South executive and three lawmakers in the council as the brains behind their attack on the lawmakers.
“A blue and white coloured 12-seater bus with registration number JRT 455 XA and other dangerous weapons were recovered from the hoodlums,” the source explained.
