Oby Ezekwesili Weighs In On Ban On Traffic Hawking


The Lagos State Government on Friday, July 1st said it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

Many Lagosians are divided on the issue as the law would not affect sellers alone but buyers alike. However, Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili shared her thoughts from the economic point of view and INFORMATION NIGERIA brings you everything she has to say.

In a series of tweets on Monday, July 4th, the forerunner of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign said that street hawking which is a form of Informal economy, is critical to our Economic Growth, Employment and Poverty Reduction. However, it is viewed with suspicion despite its benefits mostly because informality is equated with criminality and leads to “Bans”.

  • In her economic analysis, it’s helpful, but, street trading here, especially in Lagos State has turned to economic woes. You can be robbed in daylight. Besides, fake products are mostly sold on streets.
