Senator Buruji Kashamu has had his new application seeking the halt of his arrest by the Department of State Security and the Police declined by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
The long-running attempt to arrest Kashamu, who represents Ogun East Senatorial District is to facilitate his extradition to the United States of America where he is supposedly facing drug-related charges.
However, the presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, granted the Senator’s request to hear the fundamental right application during vacation.
Kashamu’s counsel, Mr. Godswill Mrakpor, had asked the court to restrain the security agencies from arresting his client and grant an urgent hearing on his application during vacation.
He had also informed the court that the security agencies were acting based on a “politically motivated petition”, which he claimed was authored by Representative Oladipupo Adebutu from Ogun State.
The court has adjourned the case to September 8 for further hearing.
