Despite earlier reports of a planned boycott of the quarterfinal by Nigeria’s Dream team VI, the match went on as planned and ended with a victory for Nigerians.
The Dream team have been plagued by a myriad of issued and only arrived at the Olympic games five hours before their opening encounter against Japan.
Against all odds, the team qualified from Group B with one match to spare but a delay in the payment of their allowances by Nigeria’s ministry of sports overshadowed the quarter-final tie.
Nigeria controlled the match from start to finish, leaving the Danes with precious little in the encounter. It was perhaps telling that Nigeria’s captain, John Mikel Obi, who reportedly paid the hotel bills after the team became stranded opened the scoring.
Denmark probed a few times but Nigeria’s goalkeeper proved up to the task and in the second half, Nigeria put the goal to bed with a sublime goal from Aminu Umar. All around, it was a fantastic performance from the Dream team who will now be looking to go all the way!
