Shi’ites Warn Of Dire Consequences If Leader Goes Blind In Detention

Ibrahim-El-ZakzakyThe Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shi’ites, Wednesday warned that it will be a travesty of justice if its leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky goes blind in detention.

The group, in a statement signed by the President of its Media Forum, Ibrahim Musa, made available to newsmen in Kaduna, reiterated its demand for the unconditional release of El-Zakzaky, who has been in “protective custody” of the security agencies since December 2015.

They further warned that if the Shi’ite leader suffers any further physical disability due to his being denied access to adequate medical attention, there would be dire consequences.

The IMN has been organizing rallies across the country to mount pressure on the government to set free their leader, his wife and other members of the group, who have been incarcerated by government since the December 2015 clash between its members and soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The statement further states: “We understand those that sanctioned his detention and those detaining him want to humiliate him and make sure that he goes completely blind before he is eventually released thereby rendering him powerless the moment he is released from unconstitutional and illegal detention.

“The health of our leader and the wife continues to deteriorate on a daily basis and those holding him in custody are playing politics with his detention and that of his wife and we urge the Nigerian people and the international community to intervene in this crude violation of the fundamental rights of our leader.

“The Nigerian constitution and laws do not sanction detention without trial. We still insist that our leader should be taken to court if those holding him believe that he has committed any offence known to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, otherwise he must be released forthwith”.
