And the 27-year-old, who wore the prestigious no.10 shirt in his final two seasons at Real Madrid, wants to take the shirt number after finally being handed the number on the international stage following Lukas Podolski’s retirement.

“For me, the number means a lot,” the Arsenal playmaker told Express about his international number change. “It is my favourite number. Football legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Diego Maradona and Pele have this number. I’m really happy about it.

“I wanted to have the number a few years ago, but so did Lukas Podolski and he had played more matches than me. Now I have access!

“Of course, I’ve previously given those in charge a signal. The number is right for me and my position as playmaker.”

And when quizzed on whether he would make a move for the now vacant no.10 shirt at Arsenal, the former Real Madrid ace replied: “Yes, it has become free and I definitely want it.”
