Managerless Valencia managed their first win of the season on Thursday night after losing their opening four matches. Valencia were up against newly promoted Alaves who shocked Barcelona on the opening day with a 2-1 win at the Camp Nou.
Valencia took the lead in the first half when Jose Gaya, who appears to have rediscovered his crossing boots swung in a cross which Alaves defender, Victor Laguardia nodded in.
The cruel own goal didn’t knock the stuffing out of Alaves as they found an equaliser just before the end of the first half through Gaizka Toquero who scored from a corner.
Despite dominating in the second half and creating several chances, Valencia were unable to grab a goal and the game threatened to end in a draw. However, in the 88th minute, Zakari Bakalli was fouled in the penalty area and Dani Parejo dispatched the resulting penalty to hand Valencia a deserved win.
