The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), Tuesday said he is standing by for orders from President Muhammadu Buhari to ban vehicles’ importation through land borders.
The customs boss argued that the ban would curb smuggling along the nation’s borders.
“I am waiting for the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to give me the permission to ban importation of cars through land borders to curb smuggling”, Mr. Ali said during an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Customs yesterday in Abuja.
During the visit, he threatened to auction seized vehicles belonging to Imo Government, brought into Nigeria without payment of customs duty.
According to him, many cars on Nigerian roads use fake customs papers, adding that most of the cars were smuggled.
“We (customs) are giving Nigerians with fake customs papers grace to pay their duty or risk confiscation of their vehicles”, Ali asserted.
