The Governor of Kaduna state Nasir El-Rufai has ordered the immediate arrest of the irate youths who attacked Shia muslims in the state.

El-Rufai, in a statement signed by his spokesperson Samuel Aruwan, urged security agents to uphold law and order as well as investigate and arrest anyone found culpable in the act.

El-Rufai also cautioned security officers on attacks on the Muslim group.

The governor said those who participated in the act must be brought to justice, as he warned against actions that would cause the death of anyone in the state.

A mob of youths on Wednesday morning attacked a Shia leader Mukhtar Sahabi, and burnt his home along Zango Road in Kaduna. The attack was believed to have been carried out by youths residing in the area. The Shia’s Islamic school in the area was also reportedly demolished.

There has been increased tension between Shiites and the Nigerian government.

Prominent Shia organisation the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has been banned by the Kaduna state government, which claims it is an ‘unlawful society’.

IMN’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky still remains in custody since his arrest during the December 2015 clash between Shiites and the Nigerian Army.
