Four die in Ogun auto crash

Four persons lost their lives while three others were injured in an auto crash which occurred on the Abeokuta-Odeda -Ibadan Road, in Ogun State on Wednesday.

The accident involved a commercial Toyota Picnic space bus with number plate, BDJ 427 SX, and a Foton truck with number plate, YKS 194 XA.

Our correspondents gathered that the vehicles were travelling out of Abeokuta when the accident occurred at Alakija village, near Olodo town, in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident was caused by speeding on the part of the driver of the Toyota Picnic, who drove into the moving truck ahead of him.

He said the four passengers who died in the auto crash included the driver of the space bus, and three passengers in the vehicle.

The three others who were injured were also passengers in the commercial vehicle.

Akinbiyi said, “The accident happened on Wednesday between 9.30pm and 10pm. Both vehicles were travelling out of Abeokuta.

“What we gathered from TRACE operatives at the scene was that the driver of the Toyota Picnic, which had seven passengers, ran into the Foton truck due to speeding.

“Four persons died on the spot, while three others were injured. The victims were all passengers in the Toyota space bus and they were all males.

“The driver of the Foton truck and his assistant ran away and abandoned the truck after the accident.”

He said TRACE operatives and policemen moved the victims and vehicles from the scene.

He said the corpses of the casualties had been deposited in the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the injured were taken to Omolewa Hospital at Odeda.

In a related development, no fewer than 18 passengers escaped death on Thursday after a commercial vehicle, marked, XJ 287 JJJ, skidded over to the other side of the Third Mainland Bridge.

It was gathered that the vehicle, which was coming from the Island to the mainland around 1pm, had a burst tyre and skidded over to the other side of the bridge, at the Adeniji Adele end of the bridge.

Our correspondent noted that although the passengers were injured, nobody died.
