President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack of Mecca by Houthi rebels in Yemen using ballistic missiles.
The Saudi-led coalition forces supporting Yemeni government forces announced on Thursday the interception of a ballistic missile launched by militias from Saada province toward Mecca area.
The coalition said the missile was destroyed 65 km away from Mecca, causing no damage to the holiest city for Muslims.
Buhari on Sunday spoke with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia to express Nigeria’s solidarity with the Kingdom in the aftermath of the missile launch.
He condemned the act and said it is reprehensible and ignoble for terrorists to target a holy land, where millions of Muslims from around the globe gather for pilgrimage.
Buhari expressed delight that the Saudi defence forces successfully intercepted the missile.
NTA reported that in the telephone conversation with Saudi’s King Salman, Buhari expressed the need to strengthen international support and coalition in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
