Nigeria’s minister of Works, Power, and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has revealed the Federal Government will not award any new road contracts this year.
According to Fashola, 206 existing road contracts were awarded in the past three years but have not been funded. He said the contracts sums were up to N2 trillion.
He made the comments at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday as he also disclosed that the budgetary practice of breaking the contracts for long federal roads into several contracts has contributed to the problem.
“Each section is budgeted for. Now, what has happened on the Benin Abuja-Lokoja road is that certain sections of that road were removed from the budget when we presented it.” Fashola said
“Wherever our roads have difficulties, it is not the entire road that is bad, it is sections that have failed” He added
