Following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to name a new acting Chief Justice of Nigeria today.
There is a fair deal of uncertainty surrounding the imminent appointment as Justice Mahmud’s replacement has not yet been named. Although Justice Walter Onnoghen is the most senior justice of the Supreme Court, speculation remains rife that he might be overlooked.
ThisDay quotes a Presidential media aide as stating in a text message “An acting CJN will be sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari at 2.00 pm Thursday,”
The message contained no indication as to who would be appointed as the new CJN,
The National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended Justice Onnoghen for consideration for appointment as CJN on October 11. President Buhari did not indicate his acceptance of the recommendation by forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
