President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday night to 21 individuals at the East Wing of the White House. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award that can be conferred on an American citizen and it is the last time Obama will award medals of freedom as his tenure winds to a close.
Talk-show host, Ellen Degeneres as well as basketball legends, Karim Abdul Jabar and Michael Jordan were just some of the awardees.
President Obama said at the end of the ceremony, “Everyone on this stage has touched me in a powerful personal way. There are folks who have helped make me who I am and think about my Presidency.
He paid a lengthy tribute to Ellen who looked on the verge of tears as she received the medal, a fitting reminder of all the emotion of the Obama Presidency.
