4 Things You Should Know About New U.N Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

The United Nations swore in Antonio Guterres as the Secretary-General designate on Monday afternoon. The Secretary General designate will take over from Ban Ki-Moon on  January 1, 2017.

Here are four things you should know about him;

  • António Guterres was born and raised in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon and was educated at the prestigious Camões Lyceum (now Camões Secondary School) where he graduated in 1965,
  • He went on to study physics and electrical engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. He graduated in 1971 and started an academic career as an assistant professor teaching Systems Theory and Telecommunications Signals.
  • He quit academics after just three years and kick-started his political career started in 1974 when he joined the Socialist Party.
  • He went on to serve two terms as Portugal’s Prime Minister. The first term spanned 1995-1999 and his second term spanned 1999-2002.
