An Iyaganku Senior Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, has sentenced a 46-year-old woman, Fatimo Olalere, to 12 months imprisonment for kidnapping a 9-year-old boy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olalere, who appeared mentally unbalanced, was convicted after she pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of child stealing and act likely to cause breach of peace.

The Magistrate, Mrs Patricia Adetuyibi, before sentencing the convict, said that the court viewed seriously the offence of kidnapping that was on the increase in the society.

She, however, ordered the prison authorities to confirm the convict’s state of mental health at a public hospital.

Adetuyibi also directed that the medical report of the convict should be submitted to the court on June 5, 2017, for review of the sentence.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Aliu Samod, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Dec. 2 at about 9. 00a.m. at Odo-Oba Eleshinmeta, Ibadan.

Samod explained that Olalere kidnapped her victim, Kalid Kareem, a 9-year-old boy, by pretending to seek direction to her destination.

“She grabbed his hand and attempted to pull something out of her handbag, but seeing her distracted, the boy broke her grip on his hand and took to his heels,” the prosecutor said.

According to him, the boy who was sent on an errand by his parent raised an alarm after he escaped from his abductor and Olalere was apprehended by passers-by.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 508 and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Vol.11, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
