The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, said it would on Thursday commence the destruction of arms, ammunition and explosives recovered by the Rivers State Amnesty Committee from repentant militants in the state.
Some repentant militants, kidnappers and cultists in the state had before the end of 2016 surrendered their weapons and embraced the amnesty offered by the Rivers State Government.
The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said the exercise would last for two days.
He said, “In conjunction with the Rivers State Amnesty Committee, 6 Division Nigerian Army will commence the demolition/destruction of the arms, ammunition and explosives that were recovered from repentant militants by the Rivers State Amnesty Committee.
“The exercise is slated to take place on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th March 2017 at Igwurita Army Range from 6.00am to 5.00pm daily. In a similar vein, minor explosive tests will be conducted within Port Harcourt Barracks (Bori Camp) during the same period,” the statement read.
It advised members of the public within Igwurita Army Range and Port Harcourt Barracks not to panic on hearing explosions.
