Imo Police Command has arrested over sixty four (64) suspects allegedly involved in various atrocious crimes and criminalities in the state.
Breakdown of the suspects revealed that while 11 were arrested for armed robbery, 4 were nabbed for kidnapping, 11 for murder, 6 for burglary/stealing, 10 for cultism, just as 4 were apprehended for child stealing/trafficking, 10 for stolen vehicles and 3 for Enugu Electric Distribution Company vandals among others.
Briefing newsmen at the Command headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo state, the state Commissioner of Police, CP. Taiwo Lakanu stated that one Osondu Chukwu (29), Uchechukwu Stanley (30), Onyekachi Kelvin Nwoke (28) and Uchendu Promise (40) were arrested in connection with the robbery and murder of an American veteran soldier, Oscar Okebata of Achi Mbieri in Mbaitoli Council Area of the state on January 12, 2017.
Okebata he said, returned home for the Christmas celebration last year and was killed before going back to the USA.
He however, said that the victim’s (Okebata) Samsung Note 5 mobile phone was later found in the possession of the suspects, who sold it for N125,000. “They were arrested for masterminding the crime”.
Also CP. Lakanu stressed that one Chibuzo Amankwe, Prince Igbo Williams, Enwereazu Ibe and Uchenna Ononogbo (all male and from Agwa in Oguta Council Area of the state) were on February 8, 2017 arrested for armed robbery.
According to him, “Following a distress call, operatives of the Command arrested a notorious armed robber syndicate who trailed their victim after he had withdrawn a whopping of money from a bank at
Amakohia Uratta in Owerri North Council Area of the state. Luck ran out on the suspects as they used a master key to damage the driver’s side door of the victim’s black Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep in an attempt to remove the money from the car”.
CP. Lakanu did not omit to say that the command had begun the arrest of suspects involved in Zenith bank robbery of Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in Owerri.
CP. Lakanu, who said that they had made useful statements to the police further disclosed that they would be charged to court when investigations were over.
Fielding questions from journalists, one of the suspects, Onyekachi Kelvin Nwoke (28) said that he bought the Samsung Note 5 mobile phone for N125,000 from one Uchechukwu Stanley (also arrested).
Uchechukwu however, fielded that he bought it from somebody who is now at large. He said, “I have promised the police to release me so that I can fetch the man I bought the phone from. How can I produce the man I bought the phone from while in cell”.
The CP also revealed that the operatives of the command on February 14, 2017 arrested one Okwudiri Aluo (35) who hails from Obiti in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area while on a robbery operation with his gang following a top-off.
He stressed that the operatives operated on a Q-Link motorcycle as they attempted to rob a petroleum dealer of his cash.
“The suspect has made useful statements confessing to the crime and other crimes he had committed. Recovered from him were a single barrel locally made gun cut-to-size and three live cartridges”.
In the same vein, Lakanu said that the operatives of the command on February 16, 2017 following a distress call apprehended one Joshua Nnawuike (20) of Umubochi Ubachima II, Awo Omamma in Oru East LGA of the state, who he said attacked and robbed one Amos Umegboso of his Samsung handset. “One locally made pistol was recovered from the suspect”.
Meanwhile, the Command had equally unveiled to journalists that one Rev Fransisco Eme, Chinedu Ubah and Ifeoma Joseph on February 22, 2017 also arrested the above named suspects at the premises of Orient Hospital at Oke Uvuru in Aboh Mbaise LGA in an attempt to steal a baby from the hospital.
“Suspects’ have since confessed to the crime, disclosing that they planned to steal a baby in connivance with a police sergeant called Iseke Koradam. Investigation is on-going as suspects would be charged to court accordingly”.
This is just as Lakanu mentioned one Emeka Onyema, Nduka Chekwube, Dera Chekwube who were nabbed while attacking a recharge cards dealer at Eke Ubaheze in Awo-Idemili in Orsu LGA of the state.
“They robbed him of bricks of recharge cards valued at N300,000, car key, one Nokia mobile phone, Q-link 159 motorcycle and cash sum of N150,000”, Lakanu said.
Confessing to the crime, Nduka Chekwube said that they just wanted to deal with the card dealer. He said, “We want to bring his business down because he makes a lot of noise in our area because he thinks he had made money”
