It was a weekend of the bizarre in some parts of Edo State as a 36-year-old man, identified as Segun Odihiri, murdered his 83-year-old mother, Maria Odihiri, in Uzzeba, Owan West Local Council of the state.
Maria Odirhi was killed by his son by using a cutlass to cut off her head. An eyewitness, Ekemeiren Ojekhugbo, said Segun killed his mother for alerting the public that he was raping his own daughter.
Ojekhugbo said Segun was caught while trying to dispose of the body of her late mother. He said he always threatened to kill his mother each time they had misunderstanding and that he has been forcefully having canal knowledge of his daughter.
“Trouble started when Segun was about sleeping with his own daughter. His late mother caught him in the act and started screaming. For him to cover his shame, he took a cutlass and cut off his mother’s head while his daughter ran away for her safety.
“Segun was caught by some youths, who were not also spared as he injured two of them before he was eventually apprehended by members of the vigilance group.
Besides, former chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Council, Folorunsho Akerejola, escaped being kidnapped or assassinated by some men in police uniform, whose motives behind their trailing him from Lampese to Ibillo, his hometown on Friday night, has not been known.
But the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Moses Nkombe, said the suspected men were actually policemen who strayed into another territory.
“They were not kidnappers, but policemen serving in another state, who came into Edo. There are procedures before entering another zone. They were brought to the CP (Commissioner of Police) and it was confirmed that they are not kidnappers.”
Also, a middle-aged man known as Aiyetobi Otaru in Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo, have been declared missing for over five days. He was last seen trekking to a stream in the hills along Somorika road in Igarra.
The Igarra Palace Secretary, Folorunsho Dania, confirmed to The Guardian yesterday that Aiyetobi was missing.
However, family sources said they believe he may have been taken into custody by metaphysical beings as they said the area he went to fetch spring water from has some history of mysticism and that they believe he would return home to his people.
