Police Sergeant shot me thrice in my stomach – Survivor

Chigozie Iwuala, survived a gun shots from a dismissed police sergeant, Wilson Ufere, has said that his assailant shot him thrice on his stomach before he lost consciousness.

Iwuala, who recently regained consciousness after several days in the hospital, disclosed that doctors had extracted two expended bullets from his stomach during an operation, adding that one of the expended bullets was still lodged in his stomach.

Ufere (dismissed police sergeant) had last Thursday while on duty with two of his colleagues on the Anara-Umuahia expressway in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, opened fire on a group of youths, mostly teenagers who were in a church procession.

One Obinna Iwuoha, a 16-year-old boy, died on the spot, while Tochukwu Uzoukwu, 25, Chukwuebuka Donatus, 24 and Iwuala, sustained serious gunshot injuries.

The development had forced Uzoukwu, Donatus and Iwuala into coma for several days.

Speaking with Southern City News,  recuperating Iwuala explained that before he lost consciousness, he saw Ufere removing his uniform, after killing the teenager and injuring the three of them.

Iwuala, who spoke in Igbo language said, “After killing the young boy, he quickly removed his police uniform and used cassava leaves to cover the boy’s corpse before taking to his heels. It was his colleagues who evacuated the remains of the boy.

“I was hit by the bullets on my stomach three times. The doctors have removed two remaining one. They said that it will require an x-ray to ascertain the accurate position where the remaining bullet is lodged,” he added.

Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent on his hospital bed, Iwuala said Ufere deliberately killed the teenager before shooting sporadically at the crowd.

He said that he was not part of the church procession, but only came to drop Donatus, now hospitalised, who was bringing money to be used to fix a flat tyre and was hit by Ufere’s stray bullets.

Iwuala, who thanked God for sparring his life, said he lost his wallet, containing N7,040, his driver’s licence and a face cap.
