Nigeria Customs Service destroys imported poultry food worth over N1bn

THE Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operation Unit, Zone ā€˜Cā€™, Owerri, says it has seized and destroyed 102,099 cartons of illegally imported poultry products with Duty Paid Value of N1,275,712,500.

Briefing newsmen in Owerri, the Customs Area Controller of the FOU,Ā  Mohammed Garba, said the seizures was made by the unit since he assumed office in October, 2016.

Mohammed said poultry products were still under import prohibition and warned that any of such products found would be seized and destroyed in compliance with the relevant laws and government policies.

He also disclosed that operatives of the unit on Thursday, April 19, 2017 intercepted 24,032 cartons of imported frozen poultry products with DPV of N259,545,600 being conveyed in a Mack truck with Registration Number, AJL 861 XA along Benin/Ekiadolor axis by Lagos Expressway in Edo State.

The intercepted poultry products, according to him, were turkey parts, chicken parts, among others.

During the destruction of the seized poultry products in Benin, Mohammed stated that the items were seized through the diligence of his officers and men, who he said, had recently been encouraged to put in their best with the recent promotion of officers and men of the outfit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ali (retd).

He reiterated the commitment of his officers to ensuring that smuggling in any form was checked, saying, ā€œAs trained officers in the course of our duty, when we intercept any suspected goods and confirm it to be brought in contrary to the laws, it will be seized and disposed of.
