Two lives lost, others injured as Security agency and drug dealers clash

Two lives were lost while several others were left injured during a clash between security agencies in Kano State and dealers of pharmaceutical products at the Sabon Gari Market area of the city.

The security agencies made up of the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Hisbah and the Kano State Transport Road Agency, were said to have stormed the market, impounding large quantities of drugs and hospital equipment in the process.

Speaking on the development, Caretaker Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Patent and Drug Dealers Association in the market, Nnamdi Dozie, said that security operatives invaded the place on the claims that they were involved in the sale of fake and unregistered drugs.

While describing the allegations as a ploy to kill their businesses, Dozie pleaded with the Kano State Government including the Emirate Council to intervene and resolve the dispute.

He said, “We are not selling banned drugs as claimed by the security operatives. We are selling genuine drugs.”

Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, DSP Musa Majiya, said that investigation into the matter had commenced and that all those behind the crisis would be punished.

Meanwhile, officers of the Command on Friday burst a car-snatching syndicate, recovering two vehicles from them in the process.

Majiya in a statement revealed that detectives also clamped down on another group of car thieves at Gwagwarwa quarters in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state and recovered a Volkswagen Golf wagon.

He said that the successes recorded in recent times started from June 1, when the command launched a major offensive against hoodlums terrorising residents of Kano metropolis and beyond.

Majiya further revealed that tactical operation spots had been mounted at all entry and exit points of the city.

He stated that recovered vehicles, which had already been identified, would be handed over to the rightful owners as soon as investigations were completed.
