Nigerian Police arrested a truck driver and a motor boy who stole 170 cartons of soap valued at N1.35 million from Tropical Nature Company, were on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court, Lagos.
The accused identified as Lawrence Afolayan,43 and Benjamin Peter,29, were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 2 at Tropical Nature Company Ltd. located at Ogba Area of Ikeja, Lagos.
Unah said that the accused conspired to steal 170 cartons of soap valued at N1.35 million property of Tropical Nature Company Ltd.
He alleged that the accused were directed to deliver 3000 cartons of Dudu Osun soap to a customer in Kano.
However, Afolayan and Peter claimed that they were robbed of 170 cartons by armed robbers on their way to Kano while sleeping, the prosecutor said.
Unah said that when the accused told the management about the incident, the company suspected that they must have sold the cartons of soap and converted the proceeds for their personal use.
The management reported the case to the police and the accused were arrested for further questioning.
However, the duo pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo , granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
She, however, adjourned the case till July 12, for trial.
