Police kill two armed robbers on Benin-Ore road

Two members of a highway robbery gang were gunned down on Friday while another member was arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command along the Sagamu-Benin-Ore Expressway.

The robbers were said to have met their Waterloo around J4 axis, Ogun Waterside area of the expressway.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, paraded the suspect before journalists at Igbeba Area Command in Ijebu-Ode area of the state, on Friday, saying the police acted on a tip-off.

He said a distress call was received by his men in Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters and that the officers immediately followed up on the tip off.

He explained that the DPO, John Okoh, led the anti-robbery team to the scene and they engaged the robbers in a gun duel which lasted for hours.

The police boss said other members of the syndicate escaped from the scene with various degrees of injury, but two other members of the gang were killed.

He said, “In the early hours of today, our men at Ogbere Division received a distress call about a group of bandits who blocked Sagamu/Ore expressway at J4 area to rob commuters plying the road.

“Upon the distress call, the DPO of the station, JohnOkoh led his anti-robbery and other tactical and combat team to the scene where they met the robbers dispossessing commuters of their valuables.

“On sighting the policemen, the bandits engaged them in a gun duel which lasted for hours. At the end of the encounter, two members of the dreaded syndicate were gunned down and one was arrested alive while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries.

“The victims were rescued unhurt and we have launched serious manhunt for the members of the gang who escaped.”
