Gunmen receive N2.5m ransom from monarch’s wife

The wife of the clan head of Obong in the Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Naomi Jumbo, has regained her freedom after N2.5m ransom was paid to her kidnappers.

Naomi was kidnapped by five unidentified gunmen near their palace at Ibio Edem Urua.

A family source told our correspondent on Thursday that the monarch paid N2.5m to free his wife “after much negotiation.”

The source said the kidnappers blindfolded the victim before taking her from their hideout.

She was said to have been left near Iwukem village, which is about 10 minutes drive to the palace at Ibio Edem Urua.

It was learnt that the hoodlums called the monarch, Chief Tuesday Jumbo, to pick his wife from where they had taken her to.

The woman was said to have been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

“They dumped her at Iwukem village at about 7pm on Wednesday. The husband was immediately alerted to pick her up from the place,” the source said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Bala Elkana, who confirmed Naomi’s release, said the police were not aware of the payment of any money to the hoodlums.

According to him, the police have the suspects in their custody.

He said, “I am not aware of any ransom; we do not negotiate with kidnappers. We have all the suspects in our custody.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Muazu Zubairu, has relocated the command’s task force unit to Etim Ekpo, as he promised when he visited the monarch.

He urged the civil society to work in close collaboration with the police to rid Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun LGAs of cult members and kidnappers.
