Conductor Dies, Eight Injured In Tragic Accident

A bus conductor in one of the very rowdy areas in Lagos State has lost his life in a ghastly road crash which injured others.

A crash involving a commercial bus and a Toyota Camry in the Orile area of Lagos State has claimed the life of a conductor.
In another accident which happened at the Oworonshoki end of the Third Mainland Bridge, eight persons were injured after a Toyota Hiace and a trailer collided.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the commercial bus, a Volkswagen Vanagon with number plate LRS 125 XP, was heading towards Orile around 2pm on Sunday when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The bus was said to have rammed into the Toyota Camry from behind during which the conductor, who was reportedly hanging on to the vehicle’s door, was crushed.
Policemen from the Orile division were said to have rushed him to a private hospital in the area, where he gave up the ghost.
An eyewitness, Kolapo Philip, told a correspondent that apart from the fatality, no injury was recorded in the crash.
He said, “I think the brakes of the bus failed. The driver tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle; it was in the process that he rammed it into the Toyota car, which was badly damaged.

“The bus conductor was hanging on to the door. His body was smashed against the car during the collision. I learnt that he died at El-Shaddai Hospital on Coker Street, Orile. None of the two drivers and the passengers on the bus was injured.”
A correspondent learnt that the Third Mainland Bridge accident also resulted from a brake failure, after which the bus ran into the trailer.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and a team of policemen, led by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, responded to the accident.
The victims, four of who sustained serious injuries, were reportedly taken to the Accident and Emergency Centre at Tollgate, Ojota.
The LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, confirmed the Third Mainland Bridge accident, while the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti confirmed the two crashes.
Oti said, “A Volkswagen commercial bus driven by one Monday Johnson of 25, Agaye Street, Ijedodo, Ijegun, allegedly lost control at the Orile area and rammed into a Toyota Camry with number plate, Epe 160 EV, driven by one Teko Michael of 44, Ejere Street, Surulere. As a result, the conductor of the bus sustained injuries and was rushed to El-Shaddai Hospital, where he later died. His corpse was taken to the Mainland General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
“On Saturday, December 23, 2017, around 11am, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, who was on observation patrol across the state, stumbled on an accident scene on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Oworosoki, Lagos.

“The CP immediately initiated and supervised the rescue efforts with a handful of policemen who cordoned off the scene to enable the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) ambulance services to give first aid and take the eight badly injured victims to the hospital.

“The accident, which involved a Toyota Hiace commuter bus and an articulated vehicle (trailer), occurred when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle as a result of a brake failure.”
Tiamiyu and Oti warned motorists, especially commercial drivers, to always obey traffic rules and ensure their vehicles were in good condition before putting them on the road.
