Three members of a notorious cult gang were arrested by the Cross River State Police Command, while two locally-made pistols, two live cartridges and one expended AA cartridge were recovered.
Although the names of the cult group was not stated, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, told Southern City News that the suspects were arrested by a team of policemen attached to the Operation Skolombo Special Task Force.
The task force was set up by the state government to mop up street urchins in Calabar.
A cult group had on Sunday killed a man simply identified as Jude in his shop along the Okoro Agbor axis of Marian Road in Calabar.
Speaking on the arrest, Inuwa explained that the suspects were arrested by men of the Skolombo unit on routine patrol within the Calabar metropolis.
He said, “On the night of December 16, 2017, our men arrested three suspected cultists, who are members of Vikings confraternity group. During the arrest, we recovered two locally-made pistols, two live cartridges and one expended cartridge. We have handed over the suspects to the Anti-Cult and Kidnapping Squad for discreet investigation.”
The police commissioner vowed that the command would not relent in arresting and prosecuting criminals in the state.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that the death of Jude was linked to a renewed gang war in Calabar.
According to an eyewitness, Moses Abang, the incident happened between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on Saturday.
The father of two was shot in the stomach and was rushed to an unknown hospital where he was confirmed dead.
